Stingy Jack always had to go out in October nights with his simple turnip lantern, wandering the forest till sunrise of November, but what is Jack up to when morning comes? Why tending to his pumpkin patch of course! Those nasty crows always come around to give Jack trouble, trying to eat HIS nice lovely pumpkins. Jack, however, will have none of it! Jack wanted a drink one night and tricked the Devil into becoming a coin, keeping him from changing back with a cross in his pocket, then he made the Devil promise to leave him alone for one year. The Devil Obliges, however, the next year Jack tricks the Devil into a tree, marking a cross into the bottom of the tree to keep the devil up there. He made the Devil promise not to bother him for ten more years and to never claim his soul. Soon after Jack died, God would not let such an unsavory figure into heaven, the devil, upset by the tricks, kept up his bargain to not take Jacks soul, leaving him with one burning coal to wander the earth in his turnip lantern for the rest of eternity.
